Thanks for sharing your experience with Stoicism, John. I thought to add a few book recommendations and my own experience with Stoicism:

Recommended books on Stoicism

I am in the middle of exploring this intriguing philosophy—which too me felt like a natural exploration to do after enjoying the philosophy around Buddhism, but not the religion necessarily. In any case, I’ve yet to know where I’ll end up with Stoicism. But, I do agree with what you’re saying about becoming more aware and disciplined thanks to Stoicism.

The past few months I’ve slowly been reading three books about Stoicism: 1) Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius, and 2) The Obstacle is the Way and 3) The Daily Stoic, both by Ryan Holiday.

Note: There are a lot of translations of Marcus Aurelius “Meditations,” and I did a lot of research before I ended up with the one above (follow the link).
