I’ll double up on what Piotr has already said, but the post also reminds me off some thoughts I’ve had on motivation recently: “What motivates you?” must be one of the most important questions to ask when interviewing for people.
How can you expect them to put their best effort into their jobs, if you don’t know how their motivation fits into the company or they don’t know what motivates them? And if they don’t know, maybe they’re not really looking but instead running away from something they didn’t like—more common?
How can you make work a great place for them, if you don’t know what motivates them? I’ve also found that two people knowing what motivates themselves and the other is a great builder of trust.
Just a few loose thoughts I might explore in longer form at some point.
